NEW OFFERING: Accelerate your education with the Missouri Innovation Campus!

A design engineer creates the initial blueprints for various structures, systems, machines, or equipment. They are part of a design team that includes drafters and civil or mechanical engineers. Most design engineers use advanced computer technology and applications, such as computer-aided design software, to help them create and test virtual models.

Depending on the type of structure or machine that is being built, a design engineer may be asked to construct a physical model or prototype to test in realistic situations. Designers are employed in many different government organizations and industries, including research and development companies, construction firms, and product manufacturing plants.

This Center of Excellence is for seniors who are interested in pursuing a college degree in engineering.

Credit hours

Students can earn up to three college hours at University of Missouri - Kansas City.

What you’ll learn.
This is a full year engineering research course where you will work on two major engineering projects and research a topic. During the fall semester you’ll work on an open-ended EDD problem and research, design, and devise a solution.

During the second semester, you will work in a team to research, design, and construct a solution to an open-ended engineering problem through the Lee’s Summit Public Works Department. You will apply principles developed in your previous courses, learn advanced physics applications, and be guided by an engineering mentor. At the end of the year, you must present progress reports, submit a final written report, and defend their solutions to a panel of outside reviewers.
